아프가니스탄 내 미군 주도 연합군은 지난달 22일 서부 헤라트 지방의 아지즈아바드 마을에 행해진 공습을 자체 조사한 결과 민간인 사망자가 많아야 7명이라고 밝혔습니다.
하지만 아프가니스탄 정부와 유엔은 당시 공습으로 민간인 90명이 사망했으며, 희생자의 대부분은 어린이들이라고 주장하고 있습니다.
미군 주도 연합군은 2일 새 보고서를 발표하고 당시 공습으로 30명내지 35명의 탈레반 무장요원들과 5명에서 7명의 어린이들이 사망했다고 밝혔습니다. 관계자들은 사망자 가운데는 잘 알려진 탈레반 지휘자 물라 사드크도 포함됐다고 말했습니다.
연합군은 또 당시 공습은 미군과 아프간 군이 무장요원들의 공격을 받고 있었기 때문에 정당한 대응이었다고 밝히고 있습니다.
이와 관련해 마리 오카베 유엔 대변인은 2일 기자들에게 유엔은 희생자 가운데 여성과 아이들이 포함됐다는 유엔 자체 조사 결과를 여전히 신뢰한다고 말했습니다.

The U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan says its investigation into allegations that a U.S. airstrike killed dozens of Afghans has found that, at most, seven civilians died.
Both the Afghan government and the United Nations have said 90 civilians -- mostly children -- were killed August 22nd, during the airstrike on the village of Azizabad in western Herat province.
Today (Tuesday), the U.S.-led coalition issued a new report saying 30 to 35 Taliban militants and five to seven civilians were killed. Officials say a well-known Taliban commander, Mullah Sadiq, was among the dead.
The coalition says the airstrike was justified because U.S.-led troops and Afghan forces had come under fire from militants.
The U.S.-led coalition says it determined the casualties by observing enemy movements during the operation, and assessing the scene afterwards.
A U.N. deputy spokeswoman (Marie Okabe) today told reporters the U.N. stands by its findings that women and children were among the many casualties of the incident.
