마잉주 타이완 총통이 진먼도 전쟁 발발 50주년을 맞이해 중국에 화해와 평화를위해 노력할 것을 촉구했습니다.
마 총통은 24일 연설을 통해 이른바 죽음의 전장터(Killing filed)를 평화의 땅으로 전환하도록 도울 것을 중국측에 촉구했습니다.
마 총통은 타이완과 중국은 차이점을 좁히기 위한 최근의 노력을 발판으로 더 큰 협력으로 나가야 한다고 말했습니다.
진먼도는 50년 전 마오쩌뚱이 이끄는 공산당과 장제스가 이끄는 국민당 군이 결력한 전투를 벌인 곳입니다. 공산당은 당시 진먼도와 그 주변 섬에 거의 5십만개의 폭탄을 투척했습니다.
국민당은 1949년 중국 내전 기간 동안 공산당에 의해서 타이완으로 축출됐습니다.

Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou has urged China to focus on reconciliation and peace as the island marks the 50th anniversary of a fierce battle between the two rivals.
In a speech today (Sunday) on Taiwan's outlying island of Kinmen, Mr. Ma
urged China to help turn what he called a killing field into a land of peace
for the future.
Mr. Ma said that Taiwan and China should build on recent efforts to reconcile
their differences and usher in wider cooperation.
Five decades ago, the island of Kinmen was the site of a major battle between
Mao Zedong's Communist forces and Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist troops.
Mr. Chiang's Nationalist forces were driven to Taiwan in 1949 by communist
troops during a civil war.
The 44-day bombardment on Kinmen began on August 23rd 1958. During that time,
Mao's forces fired nearly half a million shells at Kinmen and its neighboring
islets.
