이날 폐막식은 서커스와 음악이 어울린 공연과 함께 수백명의 고수들이 승천하는 용을 표현하기도 했습니다.
이날 9만 여명이 베이징의 새둥지 경기장을 가득 메운 가운데 하늘에는 오륜기 형상의 불꽃놀이가 펼쳐졌습니다.
국제올림픽위원회, IOC의 자크 로게 위원장은 올림픽이 공식 폐막됐음을 선포하면서 4년후인 2012년 런던에서 열릴 올림픽에서 다시 만날 것을 기약했습니다.
204개국에서 1만 5백여 명의 선수들이 참석한 이번 올림픽에서 한국은 종합 7위의 성적을 거뒀으며 북한은 금메달 2개와 은메달 1개 동메달 3개로 종합 33위를 차지했습니다.
한편 중국은 금메달 51개를 따내면서 올림픽 사상 처음으로 종합 1위에 올랐고 미국은 금메달 36개로 2위를 차지했습니다.

At the ceremony's climax, Beijing's mayor presented his London counterpart (Boris Johnson) with the Olympic flag. Shortly afterward, London marked its position as new host with a performance by British singer Leona Lewis and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.
