Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Russia intends to keep 500 troops at a series of checkpoints in a security zone surrounding Georgia's breakaway South Ossetian region.
Lavrov spoke today (Thursday)in southern Russia, as some Russian armor crossed South Ossetia toward the Russian border. However, news reports from Georgia's Black Sea port of Poti say Russian troops and armor continue blocking the only land entrance to the harbor, and are fortifying the area despite Kremlin promises to withdraw forces from Georgia by Friday.
In Moscow, a top Russian general (Anatoly Nagovitsyn)said Georgia had violated previous agreements by attacking South Ossetia earlier this month. Therefore, he said, Russia will exclude Georgian forces from the area and from the security zone.
A Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman (Shota Utiashvili)told VOA Russian forces are staging bogus withdrawals, and maintaining checkpoints on key roads.
Meanwhile, a White House spokesman(Gordon Johndroe) described Russian military movements, if any, as "limited." He again stressed the importance for Russia to honor its commitment to pull its troops out of Georgia.
