미국과 유럽연합 그리고 유럽 안보협력기구는 그루지아내 남오세티아지역에서의 전투종식을 모색하기 위해 그루지아에 합동대표단을 파견합니다.
유럽연합의장국인 프랑스는 미국과 유럽연합 그리고 유럽안보협력기구특사단이 가능한한 조속히 정전을 도출하기 위해 그루지아로 향할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
그에 앞서, 조지 부시미국대통령은 올림픽대회 개막식에 참석한 베이징에서 블라디미르 푸틴러시아대통령과 그루지아사태를 논의했습니다.
그 회담내용은 밝혀지지 않았지만 백악관대변인은 그루지아영토권에 대한 미국의 지지입장을 재 확인하고 전투의 즉각적인 중단을 촉구했습니다.
유엔 안보리는 그루지아위기사태를 논의하기 위해 회의를 소집했습니다.
그루지아내무부 장관은 남오세티아 자치공화국의 수도 츠힌발리에서 러시아 군이 총격전을 벌여 그루지아 군을 축출했다고 말했습니다. 이보다 앞서 7일 츠힌발리는 그루지아군에 의해 점령됐었습니다.
미하일 사카슈빌리(Mikhail Saakashvili) 그루지아대통령은 러시아 탱크가 진입하자 이 지역의 통치권을 다시 확보하기 위해 총 공격을 명령했습니다. 사카슈빌리 대통령은 러시아가 그루지아 에 대한 전쟁을 일으키고 있다고 비난했습니다.
러시아 국방부 장관은 진입한 탱크들은 남오세티아 자치 공화국내 러시아 평화유지군들을 지원하고 있다고 말했습니다.
러시아 정부 관계자들은 이번 교전에서 러시아 평화유지군 10명이 사망하고 30명이 부상했다고 전했습니다.
그루지아정부는 국내 여러도시들에 대한 러시아의 공습을 중단할 것을 요청했습니다.

The United States, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europeare sending a joint delegation to Georgia to seek an end to the fighting in Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia.The EU president, France, said in a statement Friday that envoys from the three parties will travel to Georgia to secure a cease-fire as quickly as possible.
Earlier Friday, U.S. President George Bush discussed the conflict with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Beijing Olympics.
No details of their talks were made public, but a White House spokeswoman (Dana Perino)reaffirmed U.S. support for Georgia's territorial integrity and called for an immediate end to fighting.
The United Nations Security Council is meeting Friday (3 pm EDT) to discuss the crisis. Council members failed to agree at an earlier overnight session on a Russian statement calling for an immediate halt to the fighting.The U.N. refugee agency says thousands of people have fled the fighting in South Ossetia. The agency says many moved to the North Ossetia-Alania region in Russia, while some have relocated to other parts of Georgia. The UNHCR says it is monitoring the situation closely.
Both U.S. presidential candidates -- Barack Obama and John McCain -- have called for an end to the fighting.
