Russian and European leaders are mourning the death of Nobel Laureate Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the dissident Soviet exile whose unflinching criticism of Soviet rule earned him international renown.
Solzhenitsyn died of heart failure Sunday in Moscow. He was 89.
Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Soviet leader, described Solzhenitsyn as one of the first writers to speak "with a full voice" about the inhumanity of Josef Stalin's Soviet rule. Russian President Dmitri Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin also sent condolences.
In Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who grew up in communist East Germany, issued a statement praising the Russian author for playing "a decisive role" in the demise of the Soviet Union.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Solzhenitsyn "opened the eyes of the world" to the reality of the Soviet system.
Solzhenitsyn will be buried Wednesday at the Donskoye cemetery in Mocow.
