미국 공화당의 주요 상원의원이 공직에서 받은 서비스와 선물에 대해 거짓 진술을 한 혐의로 기소됐습니다.
미 연방검찰은 29일 알래스카 주의 테드 스티븐스 상원의원에 대한 7개 항목의 기소장을 발표했습니다.
검찰은 스티븐스 의원이 지난 1999년 부터 2006년 사이 의무적으로 제출해야 하는 재무공개보고서에서 거짓 진술을 한 혐의를 받고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
검찰은 스티븐스 의원이 한 석유업체로 부터 받은 25만 달러 상당의 선물과 서비스에 대해 보고하지 않았다고 전했습니다. 이 석유업체의 임원들은 알래스카 주의 의원들에게 뇌물을 건넨 사실을 인정한 바 있습니다.
지난 1968년 부터 연방 상원의원으로 활동하고 있는 스티븐스 의원은 미국 역사상 가장 장수하는 상원의원들 가운데 한명입니다.

A leading U.S. Republican Party senator has been charged
with making false statements related to services and gifts he allegedly
received while in public office.
A prosecutor(Matthew Friedrich) announced the seven-count indictment
against Ted Stevens of Alaska Tuesday in Washington, D.C.
The prosecutor said Stevens is accused of making false statements on mandatory
financial disclosure forms from 1999 to 2006.
The prosecutor said Stevens did not report 250-thousand dollars in gifts and
services from an oil services company (VECO) whose executives have
pleaded guilty to bribing lawmakers in the senator's home state.
The U.S. Justice Department alleges that while he was receiving the gifts,
Stevens was asked by the company to do certain things in his position as a U.S.
senator. However, the indictment does not charge Stevens with bribery.
