미국의 백악관은 짐바브웨 야당 지도자 모간 츠방기라이가 대선 결선 투표에 나서지 않겠다고 밝힌데 이어 그 나라 정부에 대해 선거와 관련된 폭력 사태을 즉각 중단하라고 요구했습니다.
백악관 대변인은 22일 성명을 통해 짐바브웨 정부가 '악당'들을 동원해 반체제 인사들을 위협하고 있다고 말했습니다.
이 대변인은 합법적인 선거에는 모든 정당들의 참여가 허용돼야 하며 정부의 불법 행위나 무장세력, 그밖의 참전 용사들에 복종해서는 안될 것이라고 강조했습니다.

The White House is demanding that
Zimbabwe's government stop election-related violence immediately, following the
withdrawal of opposition candidate Morgan Tsvangirai from the country's
presidential run-off.
A White House spokesman issued a statement today (Sunday) saying
Zimbabwe's government was using "thugs" to intimidate poliitcial
opponents.
The spokesman says all parties should be allowed to take part in a legitimate
election, and should not be subjected to what he called the unlawful actions of
the government, armed militias and so-called war veterans.
