버마 군사 정부는 민주화 운동 지도자 아웅산 수치 여사의 가택 연금을 연장할 법적 권한이 있다고 주장했습니다.
버마의 관영 ‘미얀마르의 새 빛’은 오늘자 사설에서 지난 1975년에 처음 시행된 법에 따라 수치 여사에 대해 6년 연속 가택연금 처분을 내릴 수 있다고 주장했습니다.
버마 정부는 노벨 평화상 수상자인 수치 여사의 가택연금을 지난달 27일 1년 더 연장했습니다. 수치 여사는 지난 2003년부터 가택연금을 당해왔으며, 지금까지 모두 12년간 가택연금 생활을 했습니다. 수치 여사가 이끄는 야당인 민주주의 민족동맹은 지난 1990년 총선에서 대승리를 거뒀으나 군사정부는 이를 무시하고 권력을 이양하지 않았습니다.

Burma's military government says it has the legal authority to extend the house arrest of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
On May 27th the Nobel Peace laureate's house detention was extended by one year. Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest continuously since May 2003, and for more than 12 of the last 18 years.
An editorial published today (Wednesday) in the state-run "New Light of Myanmar" newspaper says Aung San Suu Kyi can be held for six years straight under a law first imposed in 1975.
Suu Kyi led her National League for Democracy party to landslide elections in 1990, but the results were ignored by the ruling junta.
