조지 부시 미국 대통령은 7일 한국의 이명박 대통령에게 미국산 쇠고기에 관한 한국민의 우려를 덜기 위한 미국 정부의 협조를 약속했습니다.
부시 대통령은 광우병의 위험이 높은 나이든 소의 수출을 제한하는 조치를 취할 것이라고 말했습니다.
이명박 대통령은 7일 미국산 쇠고기 수입과 관련한 한국내 정치적 위기를 종식하기 위해 미국의 조지 부시 대통령에게 전화로 도움을 요청했습니다.
한국에서는 이명박 대통령의 미국산 쇠고기 수입 재개 결정에 반대하는 대규모 집회가 지난달 후반이래 매일 계속되고 있습니다. 6일 서울 시내에는 5만명 이상의 시위자들이 거리 시위를 벌였고, 이들 가운데 일부는 청와대까지 진출을 시도했습니다.
한국 청와대는 성명을 통해 부시 대통령이 한국 정부와 긴밀히 협력하겠다고 약속했다고 발표했습니다.

U.S. President George Bush today (Saturday) assured South Korean President Lee Myung-bak he would work to ease South Korean concerns about the safety of U.S. beef.
Mr. Bush said he would seek measures to limit the export of beef from older cattle, which are considered to be at higher risk for mad cow disease.
The two talked by phone as Mr. Lee sought help in ending a domestic uproar over the import of American beef.
Since late last month, thousands of South Koreans have been holding daily protests against a decision by Mr. Lee to lift a ban on U.S. beef imports. More than 60-thousand people swarmed into the streets of Seoul Friday. Some tried to push their way to the presidential Blue House.
The White House issued a statement saying Mr. Bush promised to "cooperate closely" with the South Korean government while at the same time supporting American beef exporters.
