이들은 질병과 치솟는 식량, 연료비에 대처하기 위한 방안을 논의하고 있습니다.
개막에 앞서 발표된 보고서에 따르면 아프리카 사하라 사막 남쪽 지역의 48개국 가운데 45개국의 2000년 이후 평균 경제 성장률은 5%로 나타났습니다. 그러나 아프리카 대륙은 여전히 위험한 것으로 분석됐습니다.
보고서는 이같은 경제성장률은 전반적인 제조업에 기반한 것이 아니라 석유와 광물, 식량 수출에 따른 것으로 고르지 못하다고 지적했습니다. 보고서는 또 여러 정치인들과 기업인들은 매우 부유해진 반면 5억명 이상의 아프리카인들은 여전히 하루에 2달러 이하로 연명하고 있다고 지적했습니다.
특히 결핵 등의 질병 역시 이번 회의의 주요 의제입니다.

More than 800 business leaders are gathered in Cape Town, South Africa for the World Economic Forum on Africa, where they are discussing ways to cope with disease and rising food and fuel prices.
An analysis published by the forum before today's (Wednesday's) opening says 45 of 48 economies in sub-Saharan Africa have grown an average of five percent since 2000 -- but still says the continent is "at risk."
The report says growth has been uneven -- powered by exports of oil, minerals, and food, but not broad-based industrial manufacturing. It also says many politicians and businessmen have become quite wealthy while more than 500-million Africans still subsist on less than two dollars a day.
Disease, particularly tuberculosis, is also on the agenda. The forum's Global Health Initiative says the contagious disease has made a comeback in South Africa, often infecting people with AIDS.
