Nepalese lawmakers have voted to abolish the Himalayan nation's 239-year-old monarchy. Members of the newly-elected Constituent Assembly voted overwhelmingly (506 to four) today (Wednesday) to approve a motion to change Nepal into a republic.
Last minute political disputes delayed the vote until nearly midnight as lawmakers argued about how much power the president and prime minister should have.
The special assembly has given the country's unpopular King Gyanendra 15 days to leave the palace. Nepal's political leaders have threatened to use force to remove the king, if necessary.
Across the capital, Katmandu, thousands of people gathered to celebrate the end of King Gyanendra's reign. Ahead of the vote, more than a thousand riot police surrounded the assembly meeting center in Katmandu. But two small bombs exploded just as lawmakers gathered earlier today, injuring at least one person.
