이라크 주둔 미군 최고 사령관인 데이비드 페트레이어스 장군은 오는 9월에 사령관직을 떠나기 전 이라크내 미군 병력의 추가 감축을 권고 할 것으로 예상된다고 말했습니다.
미군 중부 사령부 사령관으로 지명된 페트레이어스 장군은 22일 미 상원 군사위원회에서 열린 그의 인사청문회에 출석해 이같이 말했습니다. 페트레이어스 장군은 구체적인 예상 감축규모는 제시하지 않았습니다. 그러나 현 미군 감축에 이어 오는 7월로 예정된 45일간의 평가기간 끝에 권고를 할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
페트레이어스 장군은 또 미국이 이란을 포용하기 위해 모든 노력을 기울여야 한다며 군사행동은 이란의 활동을 막기위한 최후의 수단으로 삼아야한다고 덧붙였습니다.
미국은 이란이 이라크 주둔 미군 병력을 공격하기 위해 무장요원들에게 무기와 훈련을 제공하고 있다고 주장하고 있습니다.

U.S. Army General David Petraeus says he expects to recommend further troop withdrawals in Iraq before he leaves his post of top general in Iraq in September.
General Petraeus made the comment today (Thursday) during a hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee on his nomination to lead U.S. Central Command.
He did not give a specific number of troops that would be withdrawn, but said he will make a recommendation after a 45-day assessment period scheduled for July that will follow current troop withdrawals.
On Iran, General Petraeus said the United States should make every effort to engage the country. He said military action should be used as a last resort to counter Iran's activities, which the U.S. says include supplying militants with weapons and training to attack U.S. forces in Iraq.
The general also said Syrian activities, including the potential pursuit of a nuclear program and harboring terrorists, have had a destabilizing effect on security in the region.
