유엔 인도주의 업무조정국 (OCHA)을 이끌고 있는 존 홈스 유엔 인도지원 담당 사무차장이 18일 버마에 도착했습니다.
버마 군사정부는 최근 태풍 피해자들을 돕기 위한 외부의 구호노력을 전면적으로 받아들여야 한다는 국제 사회의 압력을 받고 있습니다.
홈스 사무차장은 버마 정부에 대해 국제사회의 원조노력에 좀 더 개방적인 자세를 보이고, 구호요원들에 대한 제한을 완화하도록 촉구할 예정입니다.
버마 정부는 약 1주일전 태풍 나르기스로 피해를 입은 주민들을 돕기 위한 국제 구호품을 일부 받아들였으나, 구호 요원들은 피해자들의 굶주림과 질병을 막기에는 절대적으로 부족하다고 말하고 있습니다.
유엔은 생존자들 가운데 기본적인 구호품을 받은 사람은 4분의 1도 채 되지않는다고 말했습니다.
국제 아동권리 기관인 ‘세이브 더 칠드런 (Save the Children)’은 긴급히 구호식량 전달이 이뤄지지 않으면 몇 주 안에 수천명의 어린이들이 굶어 죽을 위기에 처해 있다고 말했습니다.
현재 태풍으로 인한 공식 사망자 수는 약 7만8천명이며, 실종자수는5만6천명에 달하고 있습니다.

U.N. officials say John Holmes will press Burma's military government to open the country to increased international assistance and ease restrictions on foreign assistance personnel.
The Burmese government has accepted some international donations of relief supplies for those hit by Cyclone Nargis more than a week ago, but aid officials say it is far short of the amount needed to prevent starvation and disease. The U.N. says less than a quarter of the survivors have received even basic aid.
The aid group Save the Children warned today (Sunday) that thousands of children in Burma will starve to death in the next few weeks unless food is rushed to them.
