Thousands of Palestinians have taken to the streets to mark Israel's creation 60 years ago -- what they call al-Naqba, or "the Catastrophe" -- as leaders from both sides pledged to pursue peace.
In a televised speech today (Thursday), Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for peace talks with Israel to continue.
He said there are two peoples living on what he called "this beloved land" -- one that celebrates independence and one that commemorates a catastrophe. Mr. Abbas said Israel's continued occupation of Palestinian lands will not bring peace to anyone.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert also said he is committed to forging a peace agreement with the Palestinians.
Speaking to members of the Israeli parliament (the Knesset) today before a speech by U.S. President George Bush, Mr. Olmert predicted when a deal is finally reached, it will be supported by a large majority of lawmakers and the public.
In Palestinian cities and towns, protesters expressed anger at the continued occupation.
