U.S. President George Bush has praised Israel for its 60 years of democracy, saying it is a reason for optimism for democratic change throughout the Middle East.
President Bush called Israel America's strongest Ally in the Middle East. He said Israel and the United States both faced great challenges when they were founded and have relied on the same principles to help them succeed.
Mr. Bush made the comments today (Wednesday) as he met with Israeli President Shimon Peres at the start of his regional Middle East tour. Mr. Bush is in Israel to continue pursuit of an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal and to celebrate the Jewish state's 60th anniversary.
Meanwhile, hardline Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad today called Israel "a dying state." During a speech in northern Iran coinciding with Mr. Bush's arrival in Israel, Mr. Ahmadinejad said all the states in the region hate Israel and will uproot it at the slightest opportunity.
