이번 지진의 진앙지인 원촨 현에 중국의 첫 긴급 구출반이 도착했습니다.원촨 현에는 10만 명 이상이 살고 있으며, 관영 신화 통신에 따르면 많은 주민들이 아직 잔해속에 깔려있는 것으로 알려졌습니다.
현재 여러 지진 피해 현장에 접근이 어렵거나 아예 불가능한 상황이며, 이에 따라 사상자 및 피해 상황에 대한 정보도 입수하기 힘듭니다.
신화통신은 1만 2천명 이상이 사망했으며, 9천 4백 4명이 매몰되어 있고, 거의 8천명이 실종됐다고 보도했습니다. 그러나 신화통신은 미안양 시에서만 약 1만8천 명 이상이 매몰됐다고 보도했습니다.

Chinese rescue workers are struggling to save the lives of thousands buried under collapsed buildings and schools across southwestern China's Sichuan province.
Official figures indicate Monday's seven-point-nine magnitude earthquake has left more than 12-thousand people dead and the toll is expected to rise.
The first rescue and relief troops arrived today (Tuesday) at the epicenter of the quake in Wenchuan county, home to more than 100-thousand people. An initial report from the official Xinhua news agency says a large number of people remain buried there.
Access to several of the major disaster areas is difficult if not impossible and information about the damage and casualties has been difficult to obtain.
Xinhua reports that slightly more than 12-thousand people have been killed, nine-thousand-404 buried and nearly eight-thousand missing. However, a separate report by Xinhua says more than 18-thousand people were buried in the city of Mianyang alone.
