로버트 게이츠 미 국방장관은 23일 이라크 주둔 미군 최고사령관인 데이비드 페트라우스 장군이 중동과 동아프리카, 중앙 아시아 주둔 미군을 이끌 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
게이츠 장관은 국방부에서 기자회견을 갖고 육군출신인 페트라우스 장군이 미 중부군 사령부의 최고 책임자가 되기에 가장 적합하다며 이같이 밝혔습니다. 페트라우스 장군은 지난 달 퇴역을 앞두고 중부군 사령관 직에서 물러난 윌리엄 팰론 제독의 뒤를 잇게 됩니다. 페트아우스장군의 지명은 의회상원의 인준을 받아야 합니다.
페트라우스 장군은 이라크에서 발표한 성명에서 이같은 지명과 아울러 미군과 군속들에 대한 임무를 계속할수 있는 기회를 갖게 되었음을 영광으로 생각한다고 밝혔습니다.
한편, 레이 오디데르노 중장이 페트라우스 장군의 뒤를 이어 이라크 주둔 최고 사령관직을 맡게 될 예정입니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has announced that the top U.S. commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, will take up leadership of all American forces in the Middle East, East Africa and Central Asia.
Gates said today (Wednesday) at the Pentagon that Petraeus, an Army general, is the best person to assume the top job in the U.S. military's Central Command. He will replace Admiral William Fallon, who stepped down from Central Command last month and plans to retire.
In a statement from Iraq, Petraeus said he is honored by the nomination and to have an opportunity to continue to serve with U.S. military and civilian personnel.
Lieutenant General Ray Odierno is expected to take over for General Petraeus as the top U.S. commander in Iraq.
Petraeus's appointment must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
