그러나 동시에 문화 보존을 위해 자치권을 가져야한다고 말했습니다. 달라이 라마는 14일 방송된 미국 공영방송 NPR과의 인터뷰에서 티베트는 “물질적으로 퇴보”했으며 티베트인들이 현대화의 혜택을 이해하려면 중국의 일부로 남아있어야 한다고 말했습니다.
달라이 라마는 그러나 티베트의 현 상황은 의도적이던 아니던 간에 “문화적 대량학살”로 이어지고 있다고 말했습니다. 달라이 라마는 티베트 사태를 중단하기 위해서는 중국이 티베트에 교육과 다른 현안들에 대한 재량권을 부여해야한다고 말했습니다.
노벨 평화수상자인 달라이 라마는 앞서 13일 미 북서부 워싱턴 주에서 가진 기자회견에서 자신의 대표들이 사적인 대화통로를 통해 중국 당국과 접촉 중이라고 밝혔습니다. 그러나 자신은 중국 당국과의 대화에 직접 관여하지 않고 있다고 말했습니다.

The Dalai Lama says Tibet needs to be part of China to prosper economically, but that it also needs autonomy to preserve its culture.
In an interview aired today on National Public Radio in the United States, the exiled spiritual leader said that Tibet is "materially backward" and that for Tibetans to realize the benefits of modernization it is necessary to remain part of China.
But he argued that the current situation, whether intentional or not, is resulting in "cultural genocide." He said the only way to stop it would be for China to grant Tibet control over education and other local matters.
On Sunday, the Nobel peace prize laureate told a news conference in the northwestern U.S. state of Washington that his representatives are conducting talks with Chinese officials through private channels. He said he had no direct involvement in the conversations.
