French Prime Minister Francois Fillon toured a nuclear reprocessing plant in northern Japan today (Saturday), as hundreds of environmental protesters demonstrated against the project.
The plant near the village of Rokkasho about 580 kilometers northeast of Tokyo is a joint venture between France's state run nuclear giant Areva and Japan Nuclear Fuel.
The plant is scheduled to begin operations next month. About 700 demonstrators showed up in the nearby town of Aomori to protest the prime minister's tour.
They claim the plant is an environmental danger. Japan has few energy resources and relies on nuclear power for one third of its energy needs.
France and Japan are expected to promote nuclear power.
