프랑스 경찰은 올림픽 개최국인 중국의 티베트 소요 유혈진압에 대한 광범위한 시위 때문에, 파리에서 진행되던 올림픽 성화봉송의 마지막 구간 행사를 취소했습니다.
경찰은 7일 파리 성화 봉송 도중에 티베트 기를 흔들며 시위를 벌이는 성난 군중 사이를 지나기 위해 두 차례나 성화의 불을 끄고, 성화와 주자를 버스로 실어 날랐습니다.
먼저, 파리 경찰은 7일 정오 쯤, 수 백명의 시위 군중을 우회하기 위해 세느 강을 따라 이동하던 성화의 불을 껐습니다. 이어 성화가 파리의 한 터널을 나서는 순간 시위대가 가로막자 다시 한 번 성화를 껐습니다.
이보다 앞서 영국 런던에서도 유사한 시위로 성화 봉송에 차질이 빚어졌습니다.
한편, 이날 파리시내에는 친 티베트 시위대로부터 성화를 보호하기 위해 3천명의 경찰관이 배치됐습니다.

French police have canceled the last leg of the Olympic torch relay in Paris following widespread protests against Olympic host China's crackdown in Tibet.
Twice today police were forced to extinguish the torch's symbolic flame and transport torch and runner by bus past crowds of angry protesters, many of them waving Tibetan flags.
The Paris protests followed similar disruptions Sunday in London.
By mid-day today, Paris police had to douse the Olympic flame and put the torch on a bus as it moved along the Seine river, in order to bypass hundreds of protesters. The flame was put out a second time after protesters blocked it from leaving a Paris traffic tunnel.
Other demonstrators unfurled a black flag from the Eiffel Tower with Olympic rings drawn as handcuffs.
Three-thousand French police were on hand today to protect the torch from pro-Tibet demonstrators.
