미국 대사관과 이라크 정부 청사들이 밀집한 이라크의 수도 바그다드의 안전지대 ‘그린 존’이 오늘 로케트와 박격포 공격을 받았습니다.
오늘 공격으로 인한 사상자는 아직 알려지지 않았습니다. 안전지대 ‘그린 존’은 지난 주에도 과격 무장세력의 집중적인 공격을 받아 두 명의 미국인이 숨졌습니다.
오늘 공격은 시아파의 지도자 모크타다 알 사드르가 어제 휘하의 민병대원들에게 이라크 정부군과 연합군을 상대로 한 시가전을 중단할 것을 지시한 뒤 이뤄진 것입니다.
지난 15일 이후 지금까지 시아파와 이라크 정부군 간의 교전으로 바그다드와 남부 바스라 시 등에서 250명 이상이 사망했습니다.
Witnesses in Iraq say a barrage of rockets or mortar bombs has struck Baghdad's heavily-fortified Green Zone, home to the U.S. Embassy and Iraqi government headquarters.
There were no immediate reports of any fatalities following the attack today (Monday). But recent intense militant attacks on the Green Zone have killed at least two Americans in the past week.
Today's attack comes a day after Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr ordered his militant supporters to withdraw from deadly street battles against Iraqi government and coalition forces. A spokesman for the cleric (Hazem al-Aaraji) says Sadr issued the cease-fire order Sunday to stop the shedding of Iraqi blood.
The fighting has killed more than 250 people across the country since Tuesday, including in Baghdad and the southern city of Basra.
