French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown have reaffirmed an historic relationship between their two countries.

Sarkozy wrapped up his two-day visit to Britain today with promises of greater cooperation and closer bilateral ties as Europe faces new global challenges.

At a joint news conference at London's Emirates football stadium, Brown said the French president's visit to Britain signifies what he called a "dynamic" relationship.

Earlier today the French and British leaders called for greater transparency in global financial markets.

The two men called on banks to declare the full extent of their losses due to the current financial crisis, in efforts to stem the global financial turmoil sparked by bad home-loan debts in the United States. That turmoil has raised the risk of a global economic downturn.

Sarkozy told Britain's parliament Wednesday France is ready to increase its military presence in Afghanistan under certain conditions. France currently has about 1,500 troops serving in Afghanistan.

NATO spokesman James Appathurai today in Brussels welcomed Mr. Sarkozy's statement.

Leaders of France's opposition Socialist Party criticized Mr. Sarkozy's comments on Afghanistan, saying the troop issue should have been debated in the French National Assembly before being raised abroad.

Sarkozy's trip was a first state visit by a French president to Britain in more than a decade.
