타이완 총통선거에서 야당인 국민당의 마잉주 후보가 가볍게 승리했습니다.
미국 명문 하버드 대학 출신 변호사로 타이베이 시장을 지낸 마잉주 총통 당선인은 58 퍼센트의 득표율로 승리를 거뒀습니다.
마잉주 당선인은 이번 선거에서 중국 본토와의 평화협정을 포함해 중국과의 관계개선을 공약으로 내걸었었습니다.
미국은 22일 선거 결과에 즉각 반응을 보였습니다. 조지 부시 미국 대통령은 이번 선거로 중국과 타이완이 서로의 이견을 평화적으로 해결하는 “새로운 기회”가 마련될 것이라고 말했습니다.
한편, 타이완 유권자들은 타이완의 유엔 가입을 위한 두개의 국민투표안을 부결시켰습니다. 민진당이 발의한 타이완 명의의 유엔가입 국민투표안과 국민당이 발의한 중화민국 명의의 유엔복귀 국민투표안은 투표율이 과반수에 못미쳐 모두 부결됐습니다.
The opposition candidate in Taiwan has easily won the island's presidential
election while voters overwhelmingly rejected two referendums on Taiwan joining
the United Nations.
Opposition Nationalist Party candidate Ma Ying-jeou, a Harvard-educated lawyer
and former mayor of Taipei, won Taiwan's presidential election, with 58-percent of
the vote.
He ran on a platform of improving ties with Beijing including a possible peace
treaty with the mainland.
Beijing and Washington both reacted quickly to election results in Taiwan today
(Saturday).
In Washington, President George W. Bush said the election provides a "fresh
opportunity" for the two sides to peacefully engage each other.
Taiwanese voters also rejected two referendums on Taiwan joining the United
Nations. Both failed because they failed to draw the legally required voter turnout.
In Beijing, Chinese state run media said the failure of the referendums showed the
idea of Taiwan independence does not have popular support.
