아프리카 수단의 다르푸르에서 유혈사태가 벌어지는 동안 수단에 대한 중국의 소형무기 판매가 급증했다고 미국에 본부를 둔 인권단체 “휴먼 라이츠 퍼스트”가 주장했습니다.
“휴먼 라이츠 퍼스트”는 수단과 유엔의 무역 통계를 정밀 분석한 결과 최근 수단에 대한 소형 무기 공급업자로는 중국이 거의 유일하다는 사실이 드러났다고 지적했습니다.
지난 2004년부터 2006년 사이 총 5천5백만 달러에 이르는 수단의 소형무기 수입의 90%가 중국산이었다고 “휴먼 라이츠 퍼스트”는 말했습니다.
“휴먼 라이츠 퍼스트”는 중국이 수단에 대한 소형무기 판매를 전면 중단하고, 국제사회가 이 문제를 베이징 올림픽과 연계할 것을 촉구했습니다.
A human rights group says Chinese sales of small arms to Sudan have grown rapidly during the conflict in Darfur.
The U.S.-based group, Human Rights First, says a detailed study of Sudanese and U.N. trade data shows China has recently been virtually the sole supplier for small arms to Sudan.
It says China provided about 90 percent of all Sudan's small arms between 2004 and 2006, totaling 55 million dollars.
The small arms include assault rifles, grenade launchers and ammunition for rifles and machine guns.
The rights group called on China to stop all arms sales to Sudan and urged the world to link the issue to the upcoming Beijing Olympics.
Human rights activists have accused China of not using its influence with the Sudanese government to stop the killing in Darfur.
