태국 수사당국은 6일 태국 방콕의 한 고급호텔에서 체포된 러시아 출신의 무기밀매상 빅토르 바우트에 대해 조사를 진행하고 있습니다.
미국의 뉴욕연방검찰은 태국이 일명 ‘죽음의 상인’으로 불리우는 바우트의 신병을 미국에 넘겨주기를 바라고 있습니다. 뉴욕연방검찰은 바우트를 콜럼비아무장혁명군에 물자를 지원한 혐의로 기소해놓은 상태입니다. 구소련 공군 장교 출신인 바우트는 또한 중앙아프리카와 서아프리카에서 무기를 밀매한 혐의로 기소됐습니다.
그러나 바우트측의 빅토르 부로빈 변호인은, 빅토르 바우트가 러시아로 송환돼야 한다고 주장하고 있습니다.
태국 당국은 바우트를 테러분자들에게 무기와 근융지원을 해준 혐의로 태국이 재판권을 행사할지 여부에 대해 아직 결정된 바 없다고 밝혔습니다.

Thailand says it is investigating an alleged Russian arms dealer, known as the "Merchant of Death," as his lawyer in Moscow and U.S. authorities struggle over his future fate.
Federal prosecutors in New York want Thailand to deport Viktor Bout to the United States where he is accused of trying to sell weapons to a leftist rebel group in Colombia.
But, Bout's lawyer, Viktor Burobin, says his client should be returned to Russia. Speaking today (Friday) in Moscow, Burobin called Bout's arrest Thursday at a luxury hotel in Bangkok "unacceptable" and "deceptive."
Thai authorities say they have yet to decide if Bout will first face trial in their country on charges of giving weapons and financial support to terrorists. Bout could face up to 10 years in a Thai prison if convicted.
