아시아를 순방 중인 감바리 특사는 25일 싱가포르 리셴룽 총리와 조지 여 외무부 장관과 회담을 가졌습니다. 감바리 특사의 대변인은 미국 뉴욕에서 기자들에게 양측은 버마의 상황과 현재 정치적 위기 국면에서 유엔의 역할에 대해 논의했다고 밝혔습니다.
감바리 특사는 3월초 버마를 다시 방문하고 싶다고 밝혔습니다. 지난해 버마의 유혈 진압사태 이후 세번째 방문입니다.
감바리 특사는 동남아시아 국가들은 버마의 민주화와 국가적 화해에 있어 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다고 밝혔습니다.
한편, 민주화 지도자 아웅산 수치 여사 측 정당은 25일 버마 당국이 아웅산 수치 여사의 남편이 영국인이라는 이유로 총선에 참가할 수 없다고 발표한 데 대해 거부 의사를 밝혔습니다. (끝)
The United Nations' envoy to Burma has concluded his visit to Singapore and is heading to Japan today (Tuesday).
U.N. envoy Ibrahim Gambari met Monday with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Foreign Minister George Yeo. A spokeswoman for Gambari in New York said they discussed the situation in Burma and the role of the United Nations in the current political crisis.
Gambari has said he hopes to return to Burma in early March for his third visit since last year's crackdown on peaceful demonstrators.
The envoy has said Southeast Asian nations have an important role to play in Burma's democratization and national reconciliation.
Also Monday, the party of Aung San Suu Kyi rejected a Burmese government official comment that the detained opposition leader is barred from future elections because her family members are foreigners.
The National League for Democracy released a statement Monday calling the comment unlawful and arguing for her inclusion in the country's political process.
