미국 대통령 예비선거에서 민주당의 선두주자인 바락 오바마 후보가 힐러리 클린턴 후보와의 격차를 더욱 벌리고 있습니다. 오바마 후보는 미국시간으로 19일 열린 위스콘신 주 예비선거와 하와이 당원대회에서 모두 압승을 거두면서 상승세를 이어갔습니다. 공화당에서는 존 맥케인 후보가 위스콘신과 워싱턴 주에서 승리를 거두면서 공화당 후보 확정이 거의 확실시 됩니다. 김근삼 기자가 좀 더 자세한 소식을 전해드립니다.
오는 11월 미국 대통령 선거를 앞두고 열리는 민주당 예비선거에서 바락 오바마 후보의 상승세가 계속되고 있습니다.
일리노이 주 출신 상원의원인 오바마 후보는 미국시간으로 19일 치러진 위스콘신 주 예비선거와 하와이 주 당원대회에서 경쟁자인 힐러리 클린턴 뉴욕 주 상원의원에게 압승을 거두면서 선두주자로서의 입지를 더욱 굳혔습니다. 오바마 후보는 지난 9일 루이지애나 주 예비선거를 시작으로 민주당 경선에서 10연승을 거두고 있습니다.
미국에서는 각 당별로 1월 초부터 6월 초까지 열리는 예비선거를 통해 당 내 대선 후보를 정하고, 이 후보들이 11월 본선거에서 최종 경합을 벌입니다.
오바마 후보는 “영하 15도의 추위 속에서도 투표에 참가한 위스콘신 주 유권자들의 우정과 지지, 또 탁월한 자긍심에 감사한다”고 말했습니다.
하와이는 오바마 후보가 태어난 곳으로 이미 승리가 예상됐었습니다. 하지만 위스콘신 주에서도 6대 4의 비율로 클린턴 후보를 물리친 것은 전문가들의 예상을 넘어선 성적입니다.
특히 오바마 후보는 고소득 유권자와 저소득 유권자 층에서 고루 가장 많은 지지를 확보했고, 그동안 클린턴 후보가 확실한 우세를 보였던 백인 여성 유권자들로부터도 대등한 지지를 얻었습니다.
오바마 후보의 상승세가 이어지면서, 다른 후보들의 견제가 더욱 심해지고 있습니다.
클린턴 후보는 이 날 오하이오 주에서 열린 집회에서 오바마 후보의 대통령으로서의 자질에 의문을 제기했습니다.
클린턴 후보는 “우리는 국가 최고지도자로 준비가 된 후보, 경제를 이끌 수 있는 후보, 또 11월 선거에서 공화당에 승리를 거둘 수 있는 후보를 필요로 한다”면서 자신을 지지해줄 것을 당부했습니다.
다음 달 4일 텍사스 주와 오하이오 주에서 열리는 민주당 예비선거를 앞두고 두 후보의 선거전은 더욱 달아오를 전망입니다.
한편 공화당에서는 애리조나 주 출신 상원의원인 존 맥케인 후보가 위스콘신 주 예비선거와 워싱턴 주 당원대회에서 모두 승리하면서 공화당 대통령 후보 확정이 더욱 유력해졌습니다.
맥케인 후보도 오바마 후보의 상승세를 의식한 듯 오바마 후보를 겨냥한 공세를 폈습니다. 맥케인 후보는 “미국인들은 말로만 화려하고 속은 빈 변화의 메시지에 속지 않는다”고 말했습니다. ‘변화’는 오바마 후보의 대표적인 선거구호입니다.
맥케인 후보는 또 ‘필요하다면 이란이나 북한과도 직접 대화할 수 있다’는 오바마 후보의 과거 발언에 대해서도 “핵무기 개발을 꾀하는 적들과 조건 없는 대화를 제안하는 경험없는 후보”라고 비판했습니다.
공화당도 다음달 4일 텍사스 주와 오하이오 주에서 예비선거를 치릅니다.

On the Republican side, Senator John McCain was the winner. Now, as VOA's Greg Flakus reports from Houston, the two frontrunners are targeting each other in anticipation of the fight they see coming in November.
Voters in Wisconsin handed Barack Obama another big win, accelerating his momentum as he heads into the delegate-rich primaries here in Texas and Ohio on March fourth.
Speaking to supporters in a stadium in downtown Houston, Barack Obama hailed his victory in Wisconsin.
"I am grateful to the people of Wisconsin for their friendship and support and their extraordinary civic pride. You know, in Wisconsin, when you go to vote it is five degrees outside."
Obama urged his supporters here in Texas to get out and vote before the March Fourth primary. Early voting began here today and volunteers from both the Obama campaign and from Hillary Clinton's campaign were already on the streets today urging people to get to the polls.
The other big winner on Tuesday was John McCain, whose win moved him closer to locking up the Republican nomination. Speaking in Columbus, Ohio, McCain thanked his supporters and praised his last viable challenger, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, who, in spite of a string of losses, has refused to drop out of the race.
McCain looked beyond the nomination contest and directed his political fire at the presumed Democratic nominee. In a thinly veiled reference to Barack Obama, he said he would fight to make sure "Americans are not deceived by an eloquent, but empty call for change."
McCain also made reference to comments Obama had made in a debate last year and suggested he would make dangerously naﶥ decisions if he were to become president.
"We will risk the confused leadership of an inexperienced candidate who once suggested bombing our ally, Pakistan, and suggested sitting down without preconditions or clear purpose with enemies who support terrorists and who are intent on destabilizing the world by acquiring nuclear weapons?"
In Houston, Obama also targeted McCain, saying that he represents failed policies of the past. Obama criticized McCain for supporting the war in Iraq, which he said has diverted attention from the real enemy, the Al Qaeda terrorists who attacked the United States in September, 2001.
Hillary Clinton has also questioned Obama's readiness to be president. She continued in that vein speaking to supporters in Youngstown, Ohio, Tuesday night, saying Americans cannot afford someone who needs what she called "on the job training."
"They need a president ready on day one to be commander in chief, ready to manage our economy and ready to defeat the Republicans in November."
Clinton used similar statements in her campaigning in Wisconsin, but it appears to have little effect. Obama won in almost every demographic group, cutting into her strongest blocs of support, including women voters, which split about evenly between the two candidates.
