파키스탄의 페르베즈 무샤라프 대통령은 18일 총선의 당선자들과 협력할 것이라고 다짐했습니다. 연방 하원 270여명과 지방 의원 570명을 뽑는 이번 선거는 파키스탄에 민주화를 도모하기 위한 큰 진일보로 인식되고 있습니다.
무샤라프 대통령은 수도 이슬라마바드 인근 라와필디에서 직접 투표를 한 후 이같이 밝혔습니다. 이번 선거에서 야당들이 의회의 3분의 2 이상의 의석을 점하게 되면 무샤라프 대통령을 탄핵할 수 있는 충분한 표를 확보하게 됩니다.
8천만명 이상의 파키스탄 주민들이 유권자로 등록했습니다. 18일 오전까지 투표율은 낮았습니다. 유권자들은 지난 몇 달간 수백명의 인명 피해를 초래한 정치적 소요가 두렵다고 말했습니다. 17일 저녁에는 한 후보가 테러분자의 총격으로 숨졌습니다. 현재 전국투표소에 8만명의 군병력과 40만명의 경찰이 치안 유지를 위해 배치됐습니다.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has vowed to cooperate with the winners of today's (Monday's) parliamentary elections, which are seen as a major step from military rule to civilian-led democracy.
Mr. Musharraf made the comments after casting his vote today in Rawalpindi. His office is not contested in this election, but if opposition parties win a two-thirds majority, they will have enough votes to impeach him if they choose.
More than 80 million people are registered to vote for representatives to the National Assembly and Pakistan's four provincial assemblies.
Turnout was light early in the day. Voters said they feared more of the political violence that has killed hundreds of people during the past few months, including nearly 50 at a political rally Saturday. A candidate was also gunned down late Sunday.
There are no reports of serious incidents today. Nearly 400-thousand police and 80-thousand troops are providing security at the polls.
