이집트에서 경찰은 불법 이슬람 단체에 대한 단속의 일환으로 야권 조직인 무슬림 형제단 단원 50명 가량을 구금했습니다.
이집트 안보 소식통과 형제단 관계자들은 경찰이 17일 새벽 3개 지역내 무슬림 형제단 운동가들의 집에서 이들을 체포했다고 전했습니다.
보안 관계관들은 체포된 무슬림 형제단 소속의 일부 운동가들은 오는 4월에 실시될 지방 선거에 출마할 계획이었던 반면에 다른 운동가들은 이미 선거운동을 시작했다고 말했습니다.
이집트 정부는 1954년에 무슬림 형제단의 활동을 금지시켰으나 이 단체 소속의 단원들은 무소속으로 선거에 출마해 현재 의회내 약 5분의 1에 해당하는 의석을 차지하고 있습니다.
이집트의 관영 메나 통신은 17일 2년이나 지연됐던 지방 선거가 오는 4월 8일에 실시될 것이라고 보도했습니다. 이집트의 호스니 무바락 대통령은 지난 2005년 의회 총선에서 무슬림 형제단이 크게 승리한 뒤를 이어 2006년 지방 선거를 연기한 바 있습니다.

Egyptian police have detained about 50 members of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood as part of a crackdown on the banned Islamist group.
Egyptian security sources and Brotherhood officials say police arrested the activists at dawn today (Sunday) at their homes in three provinces (Dakahliya, Ismailia and Beni Suef).
Security officials say some of the Brotherhood activists were planning to run in April's provincial elections, while others had already started campaigning.
Egypt's government banned the Muslim Brotherhood in 1954, but members of the group run for office as independents and hold about one-fifth of the seats in parliament.
Egypt's official news agency, MENA, said today that the provincial elections will be held on April 8th, after a delay of two years. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak postponed the vote in 2006 following the Brotherhood's strong performance in the 2005 parliamentary elections.
