태국의 새정부는 이웃 버마의 국내 문제에 간여하지 않을 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
노파돈 파타마 태국 외무장관은 7일 기자회견에서 타국에 대한 내정 불간섭 원칙이 계속해서 새정부의 외교 정책 방향이 될 것이라고 말했습니다.
노파돈 장관은 태국은 동남아시아국가연합, ASEAN 10개 회원국들이 버마의 민주주의를 장려할 수 있도록 돕기를 바란다고 말했습니다. ASEAN은 버마를 회원국으로 받아들이기를 원하는 얼마되지 않은 국제단체 가운데 하나입니다.
버마는 지난해 발생한 민주화 시위를 강경 진압한 이래 전세계로부터 민주화 개혁을 추진하라는 압력을 받아왔습니다. 유엔은 버마 군부의 민주화 시위 진압 과정에서 31명 이상이 사망했다고 말했습니다.
태국은 버마의 최대 투자국이자 교역 상대국 가운데 하나입니다.
Thailand's newly elected government says it will not meddle in the domestic affairs of neighboring military-run Burma.
Speaking with reporters today (Thursday) during his first press conference, Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama says non-interference in other countries internal affairs will remain a thrust of the new government's foreign policy.
Noppadon says Thailand would rely on the 10-member Association of South East Asian Nations to try to help promote democracy in Burma. ASEAN is one of the few international groups willing to include Burma as a member.
Burma has come under increasing international pressure to reform ever since its bloody crackdown last year on pro-democracy protests. The United Nations says the crackdown killed at least 31 people.
Thailand is one of Burma's biggest investors and trading partners.
