파키스탄 군은 1일 핵탄두를 탑재할 수 있는 신형 중거리탄도미사일을 성공적으로 시험 발사했다고 밝혔습니다.
페르베즈 무샤라프 대통령과 육군 참모총장, 관리들과 과학자들은 이 날 비공개 장소에서 치러진 시험 발사를 참관했습니다. 무샤라프 대통령은 시험발사 이후 파키스탄은 강한 핵 억제능력을 개발했다고 말했습니다.
이번에 시험 발사된 미사일은 사거리 1천3백km인 것으로 알려졌습니다. 파키스탄은 앞서 지난주 중거리 미사일을 시험 발사한 바 있습니다.
파키스탄은 10년 전 인도에 대항해 핵 실험을 한 뒤 핵 보유를 선언했었습니다. 인도와 파키스탄은 긴장 관계 속에 1947년 이후 세 번의 전쟁을 치러왔습니다.
The Pakistani military says it has successfully test-fired a medium-range ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.
President Pervez Musharraf joined the nation's army chief and other officials and scientists in witnessing the test today (Friday) from an undisclosed location. After the test, Mr. Musharraf said Pakistan "has developed a strong nuclear deterrence capability."
The missile is reported to have a range of 13-hundred kilometers. Last week, Pakistan test-fired another medium-range missile.
Pakistan became a declared nuclear power 10 years ago when it carried out nuclear tests in response to earlier tests carried out by rival India.
The two countries have a history of strained relations and have fought three wars since 1947.
