앞서, 한국 충남 태안 앞바다에서 최악의 원유유출사고에 관련된 홍콩의 허베이 스피리트호 유조선 소유주와 선적사는 사고를 피하기 위해 최선을 다했다고 밝혔습니다.
지난 해 12월 7일 충남 태안 앞바다에서 일어난 삼성중공업 소유, 해상 크레인 바지선이 홍콩 선적 유조선 허베이 스피리트호와 충돌해 1만500톤의 원유가 유출되는 사고가 발생했습니다.
허베이 스피리트 유조선 소유주와 선적사는 24일 홍콩에서 사고 당시 유조선 승무원들이 바지선과의 충돌을 피하고 해상오염을 최소화하기 위해 최대한의 노력을 기울였다고 주장했습니다.

The owners and operators of an oil tanker involved in South Korea's worst oil spill say the ship's crew tried its best to avoid an accident.
A South Korean barge rammed into the Hong Kong-registered oil tanker (Hebei Spirit) on December seventh off the western coast of South Korea. The collision caused around 10-thousand-500 tons of crude oil to wash up on South Korean beaches.
The owners and operators of the tanker said today (Thursday) in Hong Kong that the tanker's crew "went far beyond normal practice" to avoid colliding with the barge and minimize any oil spill.
The companies say two tugboats were towing the South Korean barge past the tanker when a cable snapped in stormy weather. They say the collision happened nine minutes later, leaving too little time for the tanker to pull up its anchor.
