한국 이명박 대통령 당선인의 특사로 미국을 방문한 한나라당 정몽준 의원은 22일 조지 부시 미국 대통령과 회담을 가졌습니다.
정 의원은 회담 후 기자들과 만나 부시 대통령은 '이 당선인이 가급적 빠른 시일 내에 편리한 시기에 미국을 방문하길 바란다'고 말했다고, 한국의 '연합뉴스'가 보도했습니다.
정 의원은 이 당선인 역시 부시 대통령이 적절한 시기에 한국을 방문하길 기대한다며 방한을 요청했으며, 부시 대통령도 이에 대해 긍정적인 답변을 했다고 밝혔습니다.
부시 대통령은 또 한국의 새 정부 출범을 축하하면서 북한 핵문제 해결을 위한 한미 간 공조가 필요하며, 한미 자유무역협정, FTA 의 조속한 비준도 중요하다고 강조했다고, 정 의원은 전했습니다.
한편, 곤잘로 갈예고스 미 국무부 부대변인은 앞서 북한이 내각 기관지 '민주조선'을 통해 6자회담 교착 상태의 원인이 미국에 있다고 비난한 것과 관련해 부시 행정부는 합의사항 이행을 시작했으며, 북한이 미국 법에 따른 요구조건을 충족하지 않는 한 테러지원국과 적성국 명단에서 삭제할 수 없다고 거듭 밝혔습니다.

The United States says it has been meeting its commitments to North Korea under last year's denuclearization deal.
The U.S. State Department was responding to a charge made in North Korea's state media. A commentary (published by the "Minu Joson" newspaper on Tuesday) accused the United States of failing to fulfill its promise to remove Pyongyang from U.S. terrorism and trade blacklists by the end of 2007.
State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos said Tuesday that the Bush administration has begun the process of meeting its commitments. The spokesman did not confirm the 2007 deadline mentioned by North Korea.
Gallegos said the Bush administration cannot remove North Korea from the trade and terrorism blacklists unless Pyongyang meets requirements under U.S. law. He said that depends on North Korea meeting its denuclearization commitments.
Those commitments include fully disclosing all of its nuclear programs and disabling facilities at North Korea's main nuclear complex. North Korea failed to meet a deadline to fulfill those measures by the end of 2007.
