가자지구 발전소의 라픽 말리하 국장은 기자들에게 20일 중으로 이 발전소의 가동이 전면 중단될 것이라고 말했습니다. 관계관들은 연료 선적이 도착하지 않았고 비축 연료도 없기 때문에 발전소가 가동할 수 없는 상황이라고 전했습니다.
이스라엘은 지난 18일 팔레스타인 과격단체 하마스가 장악하고 있는 가자지구로 부터의 팔레스타인 로켓 공격에 대한 대응으로 가지지구와의 국경 통로를 모두 폐쇄했습니다. 이스라엘은 자국에 대한 공격이 중단되면 국경 봉쇄 조치는 완화될 것이라고 말했습니다.
유엔 관계관들은 가자 지구 주민 150만명 사이에 인도주의적 위기 사태가 촉발될 것이라고 말하면서 이스라엘의 이 조치를 비난하고 있습니다.
가자 지구내 수만명의 주민들은 이미 전기가 없는 상태로 지내고 있으며 상점들도 이스라엘의 국경 폐쇄로 상품 품귀 현상을 빗고 있습니다.

The only power plant in the Gaza Strip has begun shutting down after Israel closed the border, cutting off fuel supplies.
The director of the power plant, Rafik Maliha, told reporters the facility will be completely shut down by late today (Sunday). Officials say the plant cannot operate because fuel shipments have not arrived and there are no reserves.
Israel closed the border crossings on Friday in response to Palestinian rocket attacks from Hamas-controlled Gaza. Israel says it will ease the closure when the attacks stop.
U.N. officials have criticized the Israeli measures, saying they are leading to a humanitarian crisis among Gaza's one-and-a-half-million residents.
Tens of thousands of people are already without electricity. Stores in Gaza are also running low on supplies because of the closure.
