그루지아의 수도 트빌리시에서 수십만명의 야당 지지자들은 미국과 제휴한 미하일 사카슈빌리 대통령의 재선을 도왔던 최근의 대통령 선거는 부정 선거였다면서 이에 항의하기 위한 시위 집회를 벌였습니다.
그루지아의 9개 야당으로 구성된 연립세력이 주관한 이번 시위 집회는 선거 관계관들이 미하일 샤카슈빌리 대통령이 재선됐음을 인정한 지 얼마되지 않아 열렸습니다. 지난 5일에 실시됐던 대선 투표 최종 집계 결과에서는 샤카슈빌리 대통령이 53% 이상 득표한 것으로 나타났습니다.
상당히 큰 차이로 2위를 한 야당 지도자 레반 가체칠라드제 씨는 13일에 발표된 공식 집계 결과를 비난하면서 이번 투표는 조작된 것이었다고 거듭 비난했습니다. 그는 또한 시위자들에게 앞으로 있을 샤캬슈빌리 대통령의 재취임을 거부할 것을 촉구하고 2차 투표를 실시할 것을 요구했습니다. 가체칠라드제 씨는 야당의 요구들이 관철되지 않을 경우 매일 시위를 벌일 것이라고 위협했습니다.
유럽안보협력기구, OSCE의 감시단은 이번 선거가 일부 부정행위들이 있었지만 민주적인 규정에 대부분 부합된 것이었다고 평가했습니다.

Tens of thousands of Georgian opposition supporters have rallied in Tbilisi, to protest what they say is vote fraud that helped U.S.-allied Mikhail Saakashvili win a second presidential term.
Georgia's nine-party opposition coalition organized today's (Sunday's) protest, which came a short while after elections officials certified Mr. Saakashvili's victory. Final results showed him winning more than 53 percent of the January fifth vote.
Opposition leader Levan Gachechiladze, who finished a distant second, denounced the official tally today and repeated accusations of vote rigging. He also urged protesters to boycott Mr. Saakashvili's upcoming inauguration, and demanded a second round of voting. He threatened daily protests unless opposition demands are met.
Monitors from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said the election met most democratic standards, despite some irregularities.
