키바키 대통령은 지난 5일 젠다이 프레이저 미국무부 아프리카담당 차관보와 노벨평화상 수상자인 데스몬드 투투 대주교를 만난 자리에서 오딩가 대표와 연합정부에서 권력을 분점할 의사가 있다고 밝혔습니다.
한편, 오딩가 대표는 재선거를 요구하고 있고, 키바키 대통령측은 법원의 재선 명령이 있을 때에만 그렇게 할 것이라고 주장하고 있습니다.
지금까지 케냐에서 선거 관련 폭력으로 500명 이상이 사망한 것으로 알려졌습니다.
Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga has canceled plans to hold more street protests this week, saying he wants to give mediation a chance.
His decision today (Monday) comes as the government announced that violence following the country's December elections has already claimed nearly 500 lives.
Odinga met today with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer to discuss a negotiation process to help end his country's political crisis.
Odinga has accused Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki of stealing the vote. The opposition leader said there would be no direct negotiations. But on Sunday, Odinga said he is willing to talk as long as international mediators are involved in the process.
Leaders of Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement opposition party have called for new elections.
The government of Mr. Kibaki says it will accept that proposal, but only if a court orders a new vote.
