한국의 경기도 이천에 있는 한 냉동창고에서 폭발과 함께 대형 화재가 발생해 지하에서 작업중이던 인부 40여명이 숨지는 참사가 발생했습니다.
목격자들에 따르면, 7일 오전 이천시 냉동물류센터 ‘코리아 2000’ 지하 기계실에서 연쇄폭발과 함께 층 전체로 삽시간에 불이 옮겨갔습니다.
불이 나자 경기도내 전체 소방서의 소방차와 소방관 등이 동원돼 진화작업을 벌였으나, 건물 내부에 보관된 화학물질로 인한 폭발이 계속되면서 진화 구조작업에 애를 먹었습니다.
화재 당시 건물 지하층에서는 인부 57명이 작업중이었으며, 지금까지 40명이 지하층에서 숨진 채 발견됐습니다. 나머지 17명은 구조되거나 자력으로 탈출했습니다.
화재 원인은 아직 확인되지 않았으나, 소방당국은 지하에 가득찬 유증기가 불티가 튀며 연쇄폭발과 함께 순식간에 불길이 지하층 전체로 번져 인명피해가 컸던 것으로 보고 있습니다.
코리아 2000은 지난 해 11월 이천시로부터 준공허가를 받고, 오는 12일 영업을 시작할 예정이었으며, 이날 냉매 주입작업과 전기작업 등 마무리 공사중이었습니다.

Officials say the death toll from a warehouse fire in Icheon, South Korea, has risen to 40.
Firefighters found more bodies today (Monday) while extinguishing most of the last flames. Most bodies were burned beyond recognition.
Ten people were hospitalized for injuries, mostly burns and smoke inhalation.
Witnesses report hearing explosions as the fire ravaged the refrigerated warehouse earlier today. The cause of the blaze is still not known but officials say flammable refrigerant chemicals were stored in the basement of the building.
The warehouse was under construction and was scheduled to open at the end of the week. The victims were construction workers.
