로마노 프로디 이탈리아 총리는 아프가니스탄에 대해 장기적인 지원을 하겠다고 23일 밝혔습니다.
아프가니스탄을 방문한 프로디 총리는 이 날 카불에서 하미드 카르자이 아프간 대통령과 만나 이같이 밝혔습니다.
두 정상은 보건과 교육 분야에서 아프가니스탄의 진전 상황에 대해 논의했습니다. 카르자이 대통령은 아프가니스탄에 대한 국제사회의 투자를 촉구했습니다.
프로디 총리는 아프가니스탄 주재 나토군 사령관인 단 맥네일 미군 장군을 만나고, 서부 도시 헤라트에 주둔한 이탈리아 군 기지도 방문했습니다. 이들 또한 다국적 군의 일원입니다.
앞서 니콜라스 사르코지 프랑스 대통령과 케빈 루드 호주 총리도 예고 없이 아프가니스탄을 방문했었습니다.
프랑스는 아프가니스탄에 대한 장기적인 정치적, 경제적, 군사적 지원을 약속했으며, 호주 역시 9천5백만 달러에 가까운 경제 원조 계획을 발표했습니다.
Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi has pledged his country's long term commitment to Afghanistan.
During a visit to the country Sunday, Mr. Prodi met Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Kabul. The leaders discussed Afghanistan's advancements in the health and education sectors. Mr. Karzai called for more international investment in the country.
During his trip, Prime Minister Prodi also met with U.S. General Dan McNeill - commander of the NATO force in Afghanistan - and visited some of the two thousand Italian troops stationed in the western city of Herat. They are part of NATO's International Security Assistance Force.
The Italian prime minister's visit took place a day after French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd made unannounced trips to Afghanistan.
France pledged long-term political, economic and military support for the war-torn country, while Australia announced plans to provide Afghanistan with nearly 95 million dollars in economic aid.
