Pakistani authorities have launched a formal investigation into the derailment of an express train Wednesday that killed at least 40 people and injured more than 120 others.
Railway officials said today (Thursday) they have yet to determine exactly what caused the train to derail, but that there is no indication of sabotage.
The train was heading from the southern port city of Karachi to the eastern city of Lahore when the majority of its cars slipped off the rails near the town of Mehrabpur in Sindh province.
Local villagers helped rescue those trapped in the wreckage in total darkness, before emergency crews arrived on the scene.
Many of the passengers were heading home to celebrate the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha (the festival of sacrifice).
