미국 방제 전문가들이 해양 오염사고가 발생한 한국의 충남 태안 현장에서 지원활동을 벌이고 있습니다.
방제당국은 이날 200여척의 함정과 함선과 방제인력 3만여명을 동원해 오염 확산 저지에 총력전을 펼쳤고, 미국 해안경비대 소속 오염방제 전문가도 태안반도에 도착해 기술지원에 나섰습니다.
미국 연안경비대 태평양지부 소속의 기동타격대원 3명과 해양 대기청 소속 연구관 한 명등 4명으로 구성된 실무팀은 14일 해경 방제대책본부를 방문, 사고 현황과 방제대책을 들은 뒤 사고현장인 모항과 만리포 해수욕장 등을 둘러봤습니다.
이들은 그 동안의 경험을 토대로 해경 대책본부와 함께 효율적인 방제방안을 마련하는 등 사고수습을 지원하게 됩니다.
U.S. oil spill experts are now assisting their South Korean counterparts in trying to contain and clear away thousands of barrels of crude oil that spilled from a supertanker off the west coast of South Korea late last week.
More than 200 vessels and thousands of people are involved in the effort, but the weather is not cooperating. Local coast guard officials say high winds and waves are hampering the cleanup. Some of those assisting in the effort have reported exhaustion, as well as headaches and dizziness from the oil fumes.
The spill of more than 10-thousand tons of crude oil coated a 45-kilometer stretch of
coastline after a barge accidentally punched holes in a giant oil tanker December seventh. Officials say they fear that marine life in the affected area will be devastated by the spill.
Japan and China offered equipment and personnel to assist in the operation to clean up the spill -- the worst ever recorded in South Korea.
