한국 서해안에서 유조선 충돌사고로 원유 1만여 톤이 바다로 유출됐습니다.
7일 오전 7시 15분 쯤 충남 태안군 만리포에서 북서쪽으로 8km 떨어진 바다에 정박중이던 홍콩 선박 14만 6천 톤 급 유조선 ‘헤베이 스프리트’가 자체동력 없이 떠있던 부유선박과 충돌했습니다. 이 사고로 유조선 왼쪽 세군데에 구멍이 나서 만 500톤의 원유가 바다로 유출됐다고 당국이 밝혔습니다.
‘헤베이 스프리트’호는 26만톤의 원유를 싣고 있었던 것으로 알려졌으며, 당국자들은 이번 사고가 한국 사상 최악의 원유 유출 사고라고 밝혔습니다. 유조선으로 부터 원유 유출을 막기까지 몇시간이 걸렸으며, 기름을 회수하는 방제작업이 완료되기 까지 3~4일이 걸릴 것으로 예상됩니다. 만리포 일대는 해안 절경이 유명하며, 근처에 국립해안공원이 있습니다.

South Korean maritime officials say more than 10-thousand tons of crude oil leaked from a tanker that collided with a barge off the country's west coast on Friday.
The Hong Kong-registered Hebei Spirit tanker was anchored eight kilometers off the coast of the port of Mallipo when it was struck by a barge being towed by another vessel. The collision left three holes in the 146-thousand-ton tanker.
The Hebei Spirit was reported carrying more than 260-thousand tons of crude oil. Officials say this is the largest oil spill in South Korea's history.
It took several hours to plug the leak, and clean-up is expected to take three or four days.
The region where the spill occurred is popular for its scenic beaches, and is home to a national maritime park.
