부토 여사는 이날 북부지역의 페샤와르 시에서 벌인 선거유세에서 아프간 국경 일대에 흩어져 살고 있는 파스튠 족에게 평화와 안보를 가져오겠다고 약속했습니다. 북서변경주의 수도인 페샤와르는 주로 회교 무장단체들에 의해 통제되고 있습니다.
부토 여사는 지난 30일, 그의 파키스탄인민당이 내년 1월 8일에 실시되는 의회선거에 ‘마지못해’ 참가하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
파키스탄인민당 관계자들이 이번 의회선거에 공동으로 불참하는 문제를 논의하기 위해 오는 3일에 나와즈 샤리프 전 총리와 회담할 것이라고 밝히고 있는 가운데, 부토 전 총리는 아직도 선거 불참 가능성을 열어놓고 있습니다.
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto launched her election campaign today (Saturday), traveling to Pakistan's northern tribal area to appeal to voters.
During a campaign stop in the northern city of Peshawar, Ms. Bhutto promised to bring peace and security to the ethnic Pashtuns living along the Afghan border. The capital city of the Northwest Frontier Province is largely-controlled by Islamist groups.
The former prime minister announced Friday her Pakistan People's Party would take part in the January eighth parliamentary elections, "under protest."
Ms. Bhutto is still considering not participating, with party officials today (Saturday) saying she would meet with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday to discuss a joint boycott of the upcoming poll.
Mr. Sharif has said the election would be meaningless, unless the judges who had been removed under emergency rule are re-instated.
