이브라힘 감바리 유엔 버마 특사는 30일 버마 군부가 민주화 지도자 아웅산 수지 여사의 가택 연금을 해제하고, 반체제 인사들에 대한 폭압을 중단하라고 촉구했습니다.
감바리 특사는 이 날 이틀간의 캄보디아 일정을 마무리하며 이같이 밝혔습니다.
국제인권단체 '앰네스티 인터내셔널'은 버마 군부가 체포를 중단할 것이라고 밝혔지만 이달 들어서도 버마에서 여러 명이 구금됐다고 밝혔습니다. 감바리 특사는 군부의 계속적인 체포는 정부와 야당 간의 국가적 화해 정신을 위배하는 것이라고 말했습니다.
감바리 특사는 또 아웅산 수지 여사가 화해 과정에서 역할을 하려면 가택 연금 상태가 해제돼야 한다고 밝혔습니다.
버마는 지난 9월 친민주주의 시위자들에 대한 유혈 진압으로 국제 사회를 분노하게 했습니다. 당시 유혈 진압으로 15명이 사망하고, 3천여명이 체포됐었습니다.
The United Nations' special envoy to Burma says that country's ruling military junta must release detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and end its repression of political dissidents.
Ibrahim Gambari made the comments today (Friday) at the end of a two-day visit to Cambodia.
Amnesty International says several people have been detained in Burma this month despite assurances from the military rulers the arrests would stop. Gambari says any further arrests violate "the spirit of national reconciliation" between the government and the opposition.
The U.N. envoy also says Aung San Suu Kyi should be freed from house detention if she is to play a part in the process.
Burma drew international outrage over its bloody crackdown of pro-democracy protesters in September. Fifteen people were killed and another 3,000 people detained.
