Italian authorities say police in Italy and elsewhere on the continent have smashed a pan-European Islamist network recruiting suicide bombers for Iraq and Afghanistan.
Authorities in Milan say 20 suspects were arrested today (Tuesday) in Italy, Britain, France and Portugal.
Italian police said raids in Milan, and three other locations netted poisons and a supply of long-distance ignition devices for explosives. Police say they also found al-Qaida instructions on guerrilla warfare techniques in the raids.
Italian Interior Minister Giuliano Amato praised the operation as an example of strong cooperation among European governments.
In a related development, European Union Justice Commissioner Franco Frattini unveiled plans today in Brussels to grant police new powers to check air travelers and crack down on radical Internet sites.
The union wants its 27 member-countries to collect 19 pieces of personal data on travelers flying to and from the bloc.
