참가자들은 이번 회의에서 수인성 전염병의 확산을 막기 위한 방안을 논의하고, 기초 위생시설을 개선할 수 있는 기술을 검토합니다.
유엔은 현재 세계에서 안전하고 깨끗한 위생시설에 접근하지 못하는 사람들의 수가 26억명에 이르는 것으로 추산하고 있습니다. 유엔은 ‘새천년 개발’목표의 하나로 오는 2015년까지 이같은 숫자를 절반으로 줄이려고 하고 있습니다.
그러나 위생시설 설치는 화장실용 하수시설을 갖고 있지 못한 국가에서는 막대한 예산이 소요되는 사업이기도 합니다.

Experts and representatives from some 40 countries have gathered in India for the World Toilet Summit to find ways to give billions of people access to proper sanitation.
Participants will discuss solutions and examine technologies to improve basic sanitation as a way to stem the spread of water-borne diseases.
United Nations estimates put the number of people without safe and clean toilets at two-point-six billion. The world body says it want to halve that number by the year 2015 as part of its Millennium Development goals. But providing sanitation can be expensive for nations that do not have sewage systems in place for toilets.
