Argentines are going to the polls today (Sunday) for a national election that may put in office the country's first democratically-elected woman president.
Pre-election opinion polls show first lady Cristina Fernandez leading 13 other candidates by a wide margin -- enough to avoid a second-round (runoff) vote.
Most political analysts expect President Nestor Kirchner's wife to win the presidential race, but they note that pre-election polls in Argentina are often unreliable.
To avoid a runoff election, a candidate must win 45 percent of the vote outright, or have 40 percent of the vote combined with a 10-percentage-point lead over the second-place finisher.
President Kirchner is stepping aside after one term. His wife, a powerful member of the senate, has promised to carry on Mr. Kirchner's policies, which revived Argentina's economy after its collapse in 2001.
