하지만 벤자민 아발로스 위원장은 1일 사임을 발표하면서 자신의 잘못을 부인했습니다. 아발로스 위원장은 자신은 뇌물 공여 혐의에 대해 계속해서 투쟁해 가문의 명예를 회복할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
아발로스 위원장은 사임함으로써 필리핀 하원의 탄핵을 모면하게 됐습니다.
문제가 된 계약은 필리핀 정부 기관에 초고속 정보통신망을 구축하기 위한 사업으로 중국의 ZTE 사와 3억 3천만달러에 체결됐습니다. 하지만 뇌물 스캔들이 불거지면서 계약은 파기됐습니다.

Human rights monitors say Chinese authorities have confirmed the arrest of a dissident on suspicion of subverting state power.
They say authorities formally acknowledged this past week that Lu Gengsong had been arrested in Hangzhou, the capital of eastern China's Zhejiang province.
Lu's wife says her husband actually was detained in August.
Lu is known as a dissident writer who had posted pro-democracy articles on the Internet.
China's Communist Party often uses the subversion charge against activists considered a threat to its rule.
