미국과 프랑스, 영국은 민감한 핵활동을 중단하라는 유엔안보리의 요구를 거부한 이란에 대해 추가 제재를 부과하는 방안을 선호하고 있습니다. 그러나 러시아와 중국은 이란이 핵계획에 대한 의문을 해소할 수 있도록 국제원자력기구(IEAEA)와 이란이 협력할 시간을 더 주어야 한다고 말하고 있습니다.
World powers are meeting in New York to try to narrow their differences on tougher sanctions against Iran for its controversial nuclear program.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is leading the meeting with her counterparts from the four other permanent United Nations Security Council members -- Britain, France, Russia and China -- along with Germany.
European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana is also attending the meeting.
The United States, France and Britain favor imposing new sanctions on Iran for its refusal to suspend sensitive nuclear activities, as demanded by the Security Council.
But Russia and China say Tehran should be given more time to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency to clear up questions about its nuclear program.
