미국의 빌 클린턴 전 대통령은 26일 뉴욕에서 전세계 지도자들을 초청해 빈곤과 기후변화 문제등을 논의하기 위한 제 3회 국제회의를 열었습니다.
‘클린턴 세계구상’이라고 이름 붙혀진 이번 회의 에서는 빈곤, 부패, 기후변화, 그리고 종교 및 인종 간 화해 등 네 가지 주제를 논의할 예정입니다. 사흘간 계속될 이번 회의에는 72개국에서 천명이상의 지도자와 저명인사들이 모였습니다.
이번 회의에는 토니 블레어 전 영국 총리, 압둘라 요르단 국왕, 코피 아난 전 유엔 사무총장, 아놀드 슈워제네거 캘리포니아 주지사 등이 참석했습니다. 한국에서는 김대중 전 대통령도 참석했습니다. 알 고어 전 미국 부통령도 이번 회의에 참석해 지구 온난화 문제를 논의할 예정입니다.
이에 앞서 클린턴 전 대통령이 운영하는 클린턴재단은 최근 제약회사들과 협상해 개발도상국의 10만여 에이즈 환자들에게 약품을 저렴하게 공급한 바있습니다.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton has rallied world leaders, celebrities and scholars to discuss ways to combat world issues such as global warming, poverty, health and education.
The Clinton Global Initiative summit, now in its third year, began Wednesday in New York. Mr. Clinton's former vice president Al Gore is attending to campaign for more action against global warming.
The three-day summit includes more than one-thousand attendees from 72 countries, each of whom paid 15-thousand dollars to attend the summit and develop "commitments to action." Those who do not make good on their commitments are not invited back the following year.
In a related development, Norway's Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday said Norway is pledging one billion dollars over 10 years to support international goals on improving child and maternal health.
